Between the covers of our daydreams
Earl Lu Gallery, Singapore
30 July to 03 September 2022
About the Exhibition
Inspired by the craft circle, Between the covers of our daydreams is a process-oriented project that aims to nurture the haptic, analogue and digital encounters of craft within the premises of Earl Lu Gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore. The artists are examining elements of techne and the processes of making, alongside considerations of materiality, colour fields, intimate labour and the social production of the works.
An extensive programming of gatherings, workshops, panel discussions and conversations during the exhibition will also bring together many makers, curators and writers to the circle. Within this showcase, there is a conscious desire to document transformative acts against forgetting and the everyday. The mixed media works are a culmination and expansion of the conversation of crafting by way of extending the processes and techniques involved. Acknowledging the fact that there is strength in togetherness, this project hopes to narrate differing traditions into our present day reality.
The artists include Adeline Kueh, Alpana Vij, Ashley Yeo, Fiona Seow, Hazel Lim, Khairullah Rahim, Shirly Koh, Simon Ng. The range of works include objects, sculptures, fabric pieces, paper works, tapestries, assemblage, installations, and drawings. Two commissioned essays by Anca Rujoiu and Seng Yu Jin explore craft and its relationships to the public or communities, the environment, processes and tools, as well as from curatorial and art historical standpoints of Southeast Asia and beyond.
Between the Covers of our Daydreams is a project by the Critical Craft Collective Singapore, an initiative started by Adeline Kueh and Hazel Lim (who are also the co-curators) to investigate the relationships between craft and contemporary art, design and new technologies.

For this exhibition, Hazel has 3 works entitled: Cherubi Pop (Pink/Orange), Nights in Armour (Silver/Black) and Dull Greys of Light (Yellow/Grey). The works are a continuing study about colour theory and forms, and combines the domestic/hobby craft technique of origami with a sensibility towards painterly and sculptural forms and principles. The colours of the acrylic frames intersect with the coloured paper material, creating relief sculptures that are a play on texture, forms and shadow/light
